I decided it was time to remind people how to go deeper and leave your fears behind. The words by Khalil Gibran guide us through our torments. People at the end of their lives say they wish they hadn’t worried so much about things out of their control. Worrying serves no purpose. Being part of the “Near-Death” community has helped me see past fear and worry. What has also helped me is being in gratitude and having a daily practice of meditating on it. Music has a calming effect. Also helping others through their own end of life showed me the peacefulness. Staying present is key. As unpleasantness arise, we have a choice how to respond. This last year I’ve made progress in this by turning off the negative, the news and chatter. Results have been noticeable to my peace of mind and interactions with others (or more often less interactions with others).

- Khalil Gibran’s profound words offer a beautiful metaphor for the human experience of fear and transformation. He speaks of a river that trembles with fear before entering the sea. This imagery captures the essence of our journey through life, where we often stand on the brink of the unknown, trembling with uncertainty.
- The Path of the River
- Imagine a river that begins its journey high in the mountains, flowing through forests, meandering through villages, and overcoming countless obstacles. Along the way, it gains momentum and strength, carving out a path that is uniquely its own. As it approaches the vast ocean, it hesitates, looking back at the path it has traveled. The river fears that entering the ocean means disappearing forever.
- This hesitation is something we all experience. Whether it’s a major life decision, a career change, or a personal transformation, we often find ourselves looking back at the familiar path we have traveled, feeling a mix of nostalgia and fear. The unknown future looms ahead, vast and seemingly endless, like the ocean. The thought of stepping into it can be terrifying.

- The Illusion of Disappearance
- Gibran’s river symbolizes the fear of losing our individuality, our identity, and everything that defines us. The ocean represents the unknown, the vast potential that lies beyond our current understanding. The river fears that entering the ocean means losing itself, disappearing into something so immense that its existence would no longer matter.
- This fear is deeply rooted in our human psyche. We fear change because it threatens to dissolve the boundaries of who we think we are. We fear losing control, losing our sense of self, and becoming part of something we cannot comprehend. However, Gibran reminds us that this fear is an illusion.

- The Courage to Transform
- To overcome this fear, the river must take the risk of entering the ocean. It cannot go back; the journey forward is the only option. This act of courage is where transformation begins. By embracing the unknown, the river discovers that it does not disappear; instead, it becomes part of the ocean. In this merging, it finds a new existence, a greater wholeness, and a profound sense of belonging.
- For us, this means recognizing that stepping into the unknown is not about losing ourselves, but about expanding our being. It’s about realizing that we are part of something much larger than our individual fears and limitations. When we take the risk to move forward despite our fears, we open ourselves to new possibilities and greater depths of experience.
Or letting in the sweet dreams instead
- The Essence of Becoming
- Gibran’s metaphor teaches us that true transformation occurs when we let go of our fears and embrace the journey ahead. The river does not cease to exist; it becomes the ocean. Similarly, when we face our fears and step into the unknown, we do not lose ourselves; we become more than we ever imagined. We become part of the greater flow of life, connected to everything around us in a profound and meaningful way.
- Embrace the Unknown with Hypnotherapy
- If you find yourself trembling at the edge of your own vast ocean, consider hypnotherapy as a tool to help you overcome your fears. PDX Hypnosis, led by Scott Duvall, offers a path to navigate these uncertainties and embrace the journey ahead. Through hypnotherapy, you can tap into the courage to transform and become part of something greater.
- Khalil Gibran wrote much on fear as it was a constant heaviness that hung on the world. He also wrote on how love and forgiveness transforms our paths. Much of our lives is unlearning what was ingrained in us. Letting go and letting “be’ gives us more space to see all that is around us with softer eyes. Don’t let fear dictate your life. Once you discover where the fear comes from, it lessens its hold on your peace.Kahlil Gibran – Wikipedia
