The women who hold up half the sky

I published this post for Women’s month 2023. I appreciate this group and their wisdoms that align with my blog. I will be adding a few more Women’s Month posts over the month. And because of the hostility permeating our country and to keep this civil, I have an addition to the post to emphasize today. Our National Parks! The Grand Canyon holds significance for me as I river rafted and hiked it in the early nineties. I’ve visited many more, which gives me a huge appreciation for what’s been set aside and added to, untouched for all to see. I also did a blog on the oldest park ranger, Betty Soskin. Inspiring!

Polly Mead Patraw was the first woman park ranger at Grand Canyon National Park in 1929. She was the second woman ranger-naturalist in the entire park service.
With a botany degree from the University of Chicago, she first applied to the Forest Service but was denied. Undaunted, she was accepted shortly after to be the first woman ranger-naturalist at Grand Canyon National Park.
Her uniform consisted of the standard National Park Service uniform and a soft-brim hat. Women’s uniforms were not available.
Her job as a ranger-naturalist included lectures, auto tours, nature hikes, and writing about her findings. She served two summer terms and continued on through the spring of 1931. Today, her legacy as a trailblazing ranger-naturalist lives on.

As this years “Women’s Month 2023” comes to a close, I am focusing on the Crones and the women who hold up half the sky. They are mighty warriors of truth and justices. They are inclusive. They have regained their voices. They are wise. It is no accident that their time is now when the world is in disarray like never before. They are the natural saviors of the world as the nurturers. They who have had their “tongues tied” for way too long have been waiting to take their places among the failed leaders and lead us to a more equitable way to live. They will restore the balance needed. It’s their time.

And it’s why men (and some groomed women) push back so ferociously. They have always known the power of the Crones! I’m now waiting for the “Aliens” to show up (wink wink) as a last resort to save the planet and its inhabitants from those who worship power and glory only.

We are calling
the Grandmothers, Mothers,
Sisters, Aunts, Daughters

The Wild Women
The Crones
The seers & midwives
The mountain & desert women
The soul summoners
The water carriers
The tenders & feelers of Earth
The ocean women who are rising the tide
The fire women who are ready to roar

The girls who already breathe consciously with the trees
and the elders who choose to sing the song
that ends the desecration of our world.

We are calling you to RISE together now.
You are invited to unite & awaken
to who, what you really are,
on behalf of the forests,
on behalf of the trees,
on behalf of Life.”
