Puerto Ricans have contributed a rich and proud legacy as citizens of our nation. My first introduction to their culture was in the 1961 movie musical West side Story. Over the years I have befriended many from there and the U.S. Virgin Islands and have found their culture warm and inviting and their music invigorating. I Love me some Salsa.

Rita Moreno is one of twelve artists to have won all four major annual American entertainment awards: an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony. She is also one of 23 people who have achieved the so-called Triple Crown of Acting, with individual competitive Academy, Emmy and Tony awards for acting. She has won numerous other awards, including various lifetime achievement awards, like the Kennedy Honors and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor.

With the devastation of Puerto Rico and most of the Caribbean, she and multiple others contributed to Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s single “Almost Like Praying” where proceeds from the song went to the Hispanic Federation‘s UNIDOS Disaster Relief program to benefit those affected by Hurricane Maria that devastated the island of Puerto Rico.

My heart hurts for them. Please find a way to help. They are us and rely on support from our government to keep their economy healthy. Unfortunately, many have used them as a tax break, including big Pharma and as in the 1920 Jones Act, which has hindered any recovery efforts. Now that this has been exposed, there is much you can do. They need our help. Download the song, donate, and show up with calls and letters to your representatives. Their history is our history.
