So, we are all living in an alternate universe currently. And this is where I currently reside. This is when I look for “feel good” aversions. And this week I’ve found a few. “Famous Last Words” of Jane Goodall was one of two I watched about her. It was filmed shortly before her death to be shown shortly after. Quite treasured final few words. She had opinions about the current state of the world, our corner in particular, and those doing harm. She showed up and she made a difference by inspiring generations of children all over the world. And she conducted her own end with dignity and grace. Her legacy is in everyone she’s touched. Bless her and those who continue her work.

Another excellent and unexpected documentary is “Dick Johnson is Dead”. It is a love story from a daughter, a filmmaker, to her dad as he nears his end of life. With his full support he becomes her muse while she stages different end of life scenarios, inventive and comical. Dick is a retired psychiatrist, and his pretending is believable and lovable. This in of itself is delightful. One particular scene was almost heartbreaking during a filming of his “funeral” in which one of his dearest friends hadn’t read the “script” and truly though it was real. I watched it again just because I was so amused and entertained. A worthwhile aversion and I am staying in my “bubble” for a while longer.
Both on Netflix.

All this is in preparation for the next round of protest marches on “No kings day” October 18th. I will keep my “shields up” surrounded with love and light. Just like Portland has. Hooray for their fun and folly in the face of tyranny. AND SHIELD UP. Whatever works for you.
