For Mother’s Day, Hope and Strong Women!

On September 27 2018, a research psychologist sat before the United States Senate Judiciary Committee and described, in clinical detail, being sexually assaulted at a party in the early 1980s. The man she named was one day away from a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court.

Christine Blasey Ford had nothing to gain. She had already received death threats, been forced from her home and gone public only after her identity was leaked without her consent. The man she accused had the backing of a sitting president, a party apparatus and decades of institutional goodwill. She had a polygraph and a therapist’s notes from 2012.

She testified for nine hours. She answered every question with precision and without hesitation. The nation watched. The confirmation vote passed five days later, 50 to 48, the narrowest in modern Supreme Court history. Brett Kavanaugh sits on the court today. Ford still cannot return to her home.

History will record that the system held. It will be less comfortable recording what it held for.
